The Treatment

Chiropractors specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions which are due to mechanical dysfunction of the joints and their effects on the nervous system.

Our nervous system controls every part of our body, through the nerves which branch off our spinal cord from between each spinal joint.

Incorrect function in the spine can cause irritation of the nerves and muscles that control our posture and movement.

Chiropractors use their hands to adjust the joints of the spine and limbs where signs of restriction in movement are found, improving mobility and relieving pain.

This treatment is known as "adjustment" or "manipulation" and sometimes can be aided by taking X-rays, using heat or ice, electro-therapy such as ultrasound and interferential, massage or acupuncture needles (optional).

Structural problems in the feet can cause pain throughout the body including feet, legs, knees, hips, back and even your neck. A computerised gait scanner is available at the clinic that can detect poor foot function and alignment. This can be corrected by prescription orthotics (corrective devices worn in your shoes) - see the dedicated Orthotics page.

Patients may be given specific exercises to help maintain and improve their condition, and advice on posture and movement to prevent relapses.

If your chiropractor identifies an underlying condition for which other treatment is appropriate, you will be referred to your GP or another specialist without delay.
